Biography by Uncle Dave Lewis
Barbara Harbach is an American composer, musicologist, and a performer on the organ and harpsichord. Her formative education included a course of study in Frankfurt with the great German organist Helmut Walcha. Harbach earned her doctorate at the Eastman School of Music at Rochester, NY, after studying at Yale and Pennsylvania State. Harbach's area of interest is in music of women composers of the past, whose works she edits into performing editions in addition to performing them herself in concert, an activity that has taken Harbach around the globe. Harbach also composes extensively and her first symphony, Veneration, premiered in 2004 at Wilmington College of Ohio. She has composed another symphony, One of Ours -- A Cather Symphony, which was premiered by the Central Wisconsin Symphony Orchestra a short time after. Harbach is a driving force behind Vivace Press, which publishes many of her compositions and editions, the scholarly journal Women of Note, and the record label Hester Park, devoted to the music of women composers.
