This disc features music by Isabella Leonarda and Maria Xaveria Peruchona, both of whom lived in northern Italy in the late 17th century and belonged to a lay religious order called Collegio di Sant'Orsola, or Ursulines, which flourished at that time. Though biographical details about her are scarce, Leonarda left a substantial body of work, around 200 pieces in all, mostly sacred vocal works, and the three sections of her 'Messa Prima' are the central event here.
The Mass is scored for the kind of forces used by a small church or convent--four voices, three strings and organ continuo--and the harmonies tend to be simple and triadic, with almost no modulation or dissonance, suggesting it was intended for amateur performers. More variety
