Beginning with the tonal polyphony of Bach, Renaud, Gautier, and Aude Capuçon’s program of duos (and a trio) for violin and cello ranges from Hanns Eisler’s melodious and accessible modernity and Gideon Klein’s sensitive dodecaphony, through the haunting moodiness of Karol Beffa’s
Masques
, and Bartók’s and Martin?’s suggestive ethnicity, to Kreisler’s Viennese
Gemütlichkeit
. In the duos arranged by Frederick Neumann from the Two-part Inventions and the French and English Suites, the Capuçons weave articulations so skillfully that they seem to play as important a role as does the counterpoint itself—at least for the purposes of aural comprehension. Eisler’s Duo, in two movements, includes both singing and slashing episodes—all highly ingratiating—and the Capuçons play them with stylistic discrimination; they create from the sparse, repetitive materials of Beffa’s yearning
Masques I
and
II
, works dedicated to them, an atmospheric
tour de force
. The first of Bartók’s
Hungarian Melodies
, marked
Allegro ironico
, provides an abrupt contrast, dispelling Beffa’s now hauntingly introspective, now bizarrely eldritch, mood, and both soloists provide an ample measure of harmonic paprika and piquant rhythmic complexity in the succeeding melodies. Although the folk-song arrangements themselves, made by Karl Kraeuter, adapt these works most idiomatically for violin and cello, they embody multifarious temptations to overspice the goulash—temptations that the Capuçons scrupulously avoid. Gideon Klein’s unfinished Duo, written, according to Adélaïde de Place’s notes, in 1939 (he died in a concentration camp in 1941), the product of a student of Vilem Kurz and Alois Hába, remains accessible. Martin?, himself a violinist, created a repertoire of engaging works for strings, and the second Duo, although “classically constructed” according to Adélaïde de Place, offers a world of poignant harmonic subtlety in its second movement (the finale’s marked by jaunty rhythmic verve and strong hints of the composer’s Czech background). Kreisler’s
Marche miniature viennoise
, in which Aude Capuçon accompanies Renaud and Gautier on the piano, sounds perhaps more like the quintessence of salon music than the quintessence of the Viennese style, but it’s no less effective for that.
While the music that constitutes the program may maintain a very high level throughout, the Capuçons rise to the occasion in every work, placing ample technique, idiomatic and subtle tonal and dynamic command, and sympathetic and disciplined interaction at the service of each musical style represented. For that reason, the recital, recorded with exemplary clarity and warmth in March 2005, should appeal broadly, and could provide a promising introduction to several of the composers for new audiences. It shouldn’t be only collectors who respond immediately and viscerally to these engaging collaborations. Urgently recommended as a recording of special merit.
