AN ADVENT FESTIVAL OF LESSONS AND CAROLS Bruce J. Barber II, cond; St. James Cath Ch; Richard Barrick Hoskins (org) MSR MS 1376 (62: 20 Text and Translation)

Music of LEHMAN, PRAETORIUS, FERKO, RICKARDS, de LASSO, MAUD, MANZ, WOOD

The choir of the Episcopal cathedral of Chicago takes a slightly different approach to recorded Advent programs, choosing to bypass the perhaps now-over-familiar Cambridge arrangement in favor of Read more a setting that is less flashy and certainly less-hyped than that from King’s College, but the dignity of the anticipation is clear. The cover of the booklet claims this service to be “in the style of Salisbury Cathedral,” but it is not at all clear what that means. If it means organizing it around the “Great O Antiphons,” a sequence of seven short medieval texts sung one a day in the week before Christmas, each beginning with the word, “O” and one of the titles of Christ, this is not a bad musical idea, but it does not, as near as I can tell, represent any known liturgical usage. As it happens, instead of using the plainsong settings of those texts, the choir sings the relevant verses of the later French hymn “O Come, O Come Emmanuel,” whose 19th-century English words contain the modern remains of this sequence. Perhaps these and two other hymns were moments at which the congregation joined in (though one or two of the arrangements suggest not). Liturgies are, of course, human things and can be shaped and reshaped to suit current needs, and the form here works well.

One of the attractive aspects of this recording is that it uses recent choral music by American composers. All of this is conservative but not less well conceived for that. The opening and closing responsories are by Robert Lehman, and their occasional mild dissonance makes a fresh start and close to the service. I quite like Frank Ferko’s “O verbum Patris,” with its solo alto supported by a ruminative choir. Steven Rickards has written a fine new tune for “Come, Thou Long-Expected Jesus,” and Arthur Maud has a setting of the Marian text “Ave plena gratia” that alternates Latin and English words. The late Paul Manz’s popular and well-known “E’en So, Lord Jesus” makes its appearance among other music by Praetorius and de Lasso, and Charles Wood’s “O Thou, the Central Orb” makes a perhaps surprising appearance, but gives the choir a big, juicy, Victorian moment to enjoy.

The semi-professional mixed choir of the cathedral is well balanced, articulates its words with commendable clarity, and is a pleasure to listen to. The recording is a bit dry, but tolerable, and, as an alternative to the special fragrance of the Cambridge service, well worth hearing. In fact, this recording grew on me the second time through.
