Sooner or later, if you are a classical guitarist with a recording contract, you will release a CD devoted to music by Latin American composers. For example (among those still in print) there are collections by John Williams (Sony), Ricardo Cobo (Naxos), and a compilation including performances by Williams, Pepe Romero, Andrés Segovia, and Eduardo Fernández (Universal). All three of these alternative CDs are very inexpensive, and there is almost no duplication between any of them and Russell’s (full-priced) new disc.

This is not Russell’s first such disc, either. In 2005, he won a Grammy award for Aire Latino (also on Telarc), which includes music by Morel, Ramirez, Falu, Villa-Lobos, Ponce, Barrios, Pernambuco, Reis, Lauro, Payes, Santorsola, Cardoso, and Escobar. No doubt he and Telarc are hoping that Sonidos Latinos will receive similar recognition and acclaim.

There’s no reason why it shouldn’t. The well of Russell’s talent has hardly gone dry, and these selections are no less appealing than those on Aire Latino . Cynics might suggest that guitarists record such albums primarily because they tend to do well in the marketplace—the music is well-crafted but makes few demands on the listener, and thus they can be used as refined background music for those times when Mahler is just too much! Russell has a genuine affinity for this repertoire, however. As early as 1980, long before he even had a contract with Telarc, he devoted an entire LP to music by Antonio Lauro, and his debut CD for Telarc (back in 1995) was devoted entirely to Agustín Barrios Mangoré, who is represented on Sonidos Latinos as well.

Russell did not record all the worthwhile Latin American music the first time around—there’s nothing second best about Sonidos Latinos . Indeed, he probably could keep on doing so for years to come. I think he is better in this repertoire than he is in the Baroque repertoire, which also seems to be obligatory for classical guitarists. (Imagine if all classical pianists had to record Bach, whether they had an affinity for his music or not.) Russell’s Baroque discs are not bad, but I think he is more comfortable with the relaxed, graceful, and gently exotic sound worlds re-created herein. Estrellita , probably the most familiar music on this CD, has been recorded by dozens of chirpy sopranos, and Manuel Ponce did intend it to be a vocal work. Later on, he transcribed it for guitar, and Russell’s performance of it on that same instrument has me irrevocably sold. Not all of the music on this CD is so immediately appealing, but as a whole, the repertoire and Russell’s playing should produce many a satisfied sigh from the listener, and that’s not something to look down on. Telarc’s fine, intimate engineering adds to the mood and to the sense of general well-being.
