Notes and Editorial Reviews

Between 1750 and 1780 Spain witnessed the birth and development of the staged tonadilla, which became all the rage in the theatres of Madrid. Too often unjustly considered a 'minor art', this form in fact marked a decisive evolution, blending echoes of dances from the New World with those of the Iberian peninsula itself. Gabriel Garrido's spirited performances at last do full justice to this repertoire, which more than any other recreates the 'typical Madrid sound' that irresistibly evokes the masterpieces of Goya, those Read more works that came just before the collapse of a world that is here celebrating its final days.
