Between 1750 and 1780 Spain witnessed the birth and development of the staged tonadilla, which became all the rage in the theatres of Madrid. Too often unjustly considered a 'minor art', this form in fact marked a decisive evolution, blending echoes of dances from the New World with those of the Iberian peninsula itself.
