Notes and Editorial Reviews

Mallorca's hidden music delights revealed in a wide-ranging tour.

To the package-tour holidaymaker, satisfied with the hedonism of the commercial resorts, the Majorcan hinterland is a neglected region, bursting with stunning scenery and many hidden delights, not least a wealth of historic organs. These can be divided into two groups: those based on the Catalan-Balearic tradition (with two manuals, consisting predominantly of flute stops), and instruments influenced by the Castilian style (single keyboard also featuring horizontal reed stops).

This beautifully balanced and finely recorded disc features eight organs with music ranging from Frescobaldi (1583-1643) to Joan Maria Thomás (1896-1966). The
Read more majority of the programme dates from the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries, and although many of the composers names will be unfamiliar to non-Hispanic organ lovers, much of it is of high quality and has been carefully selected to draw out the best of the chosen instruments. The listeners ears quickly acclimatise to the unequal temperament and the occasional bout of unsteady wind; but this is an immediate almost primitive organ-building tradition, and all the more interesting and enjoyable because of it.

The playing honours are divided evenly between the Majorcan organist Arnau Reynés and the Czech Michal Novenko, both of whom offer fastidious and colourful performances. The recording quality is generally excellent though the comprehensively illustrated booklet is badly let down by the awkward and clumsily translated notes on the organs and the music.
