Read more /> In May 2007 I reviewed the companion album to “La Serenata.” Both releases stem from the same recording sessions in May 2005 under the supervision of the late Patric Schmid. It is amazing how so many works that are basically similar in tempo nonetheless never leave us asking for relief. It is perhaps the alternation of performers and the choice of material for each that is responsible for such a satisfying CD. Angelo Mariani and Fabio Campana were already present on that earlier disc, and my approbation continues for their workmanship that is sufficiently inspired to evoke our pleasure. The mixture of French and Italian texts seems not to pose any problems, and Bruce Ford once again is in fine form as he displays total control over his voice and the song. Elizabeth Vidal soars through an Offenbach bird song with cello obbligato written for the composer himself, a shepherd’s pipe song with oboe obbligato by Antoine-Elie Elwart (a signature known to those who collect scores of 19th-century Italian operas), and Ambroise Thomas’s Serenata , which gives the album its title. Thomas is also the composer of the duet Ange et mortel , with Ford’s Angel leading Diana Montague’s Mortal. Pacini’s Soldato allows Mark Stone to swagger triumphantly, while Mariani’s trio may be a distant echo of a similar number from Verdi’s Lombardi . The concluding Galopomanie by Amédée de Beauplan for six singers brings the recital to a rousing conclusion, with David Harper the unifying element at the piano throughout. Once again, we can only be grateful to the makers of this CD for not falling into the trap of rehashing overly familiar material, but searching out music that rounds out our understanding of 19th-century domestic practice.
