Notes and Editorial Reviews

COYOTE DREAMS presents new percussion works that embody a magical sense of spirited music making. The recording is filled with new works that capture a sense of our modern age with glimpses of traditional elements from the ancient cultures of our past. With extensive historical roots of percussion being a center focal point of music in their societies, the Japanese, Balinese, Chinese, and African influences in this music are intertwined together naturally with such fluidity, that their differences hardly become noticeable. With the reflective 'Coyote Dreams' Michael Udow and the Michigan Percussion Ensemble perform quirky modal harmonies, and complex rhythms with precision. Inspired by collaborations with John Cage in the 1940's, Henry Read more Cowell's Suite for Percussion has become a classic of the repertoire, using non-standard instruments such as wash tubs to create new timbre nuances. Exploring the modernity of Electro-acoustic music is Brian Bevelander's 'Synthecisms No. 6' which produces an environment of soft tone colors and sustained legato sounds. 'Gahu' based on a social dance of the Ewe people of Ghana, is an intense rhythmic workout, as is 'Progression' a piece for 4 hand clappers by Noriko Hisada. With Anthony Miranda as composer and soloist on drum set, 'Polysonics' employs an extreme contrast amongst the soloist and various ensemble members. Read less
