'In Memoriam' by Ernest Bloch is short but sweeping work that is dedicated to the pianist, Ada Clement. Bloch had a penchant for writing long melodies that utilize the full scope of the orchestra. The piece is performed here with a quiet majesty by the Slovak Sinfonietta.
'Réclčre' by Klaus Cornell is a one-movement piano concerto. Named after a remote region in Switzerland that is characterized by caves, Cornell's piece evinces the requisite degree of brooding mystery and captures in music the dark, downward spiraling nature of the caves. 'Alsea,' also by Cornell, is a string quartet inspired by a river and the mountain range through which it passes along the Oregon coast. Bursting with evocations of nature, including the sound of

Tomás Svoboda's Concerto for Chamber Orchestra is a significant work that captures the composer's feelings of loneliness brought on by his separation from Czechoslovakia. A colorful work full of great drama, the standout moment is certainly the brilliant and feverish tension in the first movement that suddenly breaks into a delicate solo for oboe. Read less
