Notes and Editorial Reviews

According to the booklet annotations, saxophone virtuoso Scott Turpen selects repertoire on the basis of works that are "fun to play", although I suspect that he'd also like his audiences to share in the fun. If nothing else, the top-to-bottom evenness of his sonority, together with unflappable technical control will guarantee listening fun, abetted by Theresa Bogard's superb piano support.

Deft saxophone/piano interplay and witty rhythmic invention compensate for Jindrich Feld's arid, tensionless brand of dodecaphony. By contrast, Ida Gotkovsky genuinely understands dissonance. All four brief movements of her Brilliance for Alto Saxophone and Piano feature bold gestures that develop with thoughtfulness and point.
Read more Anne M. Guzzo's Seeking Ithaca is modeled after scenes from Homer's Odyssey, but you'd never know that from listening without program notes. The first movement resembles slow-moving, somewhat vague lyrical jazz, where a brief episode of toneless breathing through the saxophone sticks out like a sore thumb. An uninteresting, academic-composer-worthy chromatic theme pervades throughout the faster second movement.

However, go to this disc's opening selection if you want genuinely expressive and heartfelt "written out" jazz. Phil Woods' Sonata abounds with communicative immediacy and invention in every bar. Woods the so-called "classical" composer proves every bit as vital and distinct a personality as Woods the iconic jazz improviser. Recommended.
