Notes and Editorial Reviews

There are several possible reasons to hear this album of church cantatas by this French countertenor, but the main attraction, as always with this creamy-voiced soul, is Jaroussky's instrument itself, undiminished by a decade in the firmament. This release is an essential pick for Jaroussky fans, and an equally good place to start with this remarkable voice.

Press review July 27, 2017 By Classicalacarte Classicalacarte (Saint-Donat, QC) See All My Reviews "Philippe Jaroussky visits for the first time the universe of the German cantatas. His recording of two of the most famous Cantatas by Johann Sebastian Bach coupled with two lesser known sacred cantats by Georg Philipp Telemann was generally applauded by the critics. Generally, the reviewers showed more enthusiasm for the Telemann cantatas – probably because, as one reviewer puts it the music of this composer is “… more naturally lyrical and thus suits better the counter-tenor”. Diapason gives a note of 5 out of 6 whereas Classica gives only 3 out 5. On the web, one can access at least eight reviews, all of them fairly favourable to this recording. The one review that is more critical of Jaroussky’s interpretation comes from the reviewer of ResMusica (in French). The American magazine – Opera News – grants Critic’s Choice while the British newspaper The Guardian sets its appreciation to a 4 on 5. A most comprehensive review is also available on Johan van Veen website – “musica Dei donum”. All these reviews can be accessed through Classic @ la Carte.
