Notes and Editorial Reviews

Perhaps the only surprise of Johan de Meij's 'Lord of the Rings' symphony is that there are not more works like it--other than de Meij's symphony J. R. R. Tolkein's tales seem to have inspired only a song cycle. De Meij, however, has taken full advantage of the epic sweep of Tolkein's stories. From the opening fanfare through to the jaunty march back to Middle Earth, he evokes the characters and their settings to great effect. René Joly's ensemble presents this majestic work in brilliant sound, with accomplished playing from all and solo turns which reflect a strong comprehension of the music's program. Joly's reading is somewhat broader and has sharper delineations of texture than that of Pierre Kuijpers with the Dutch Royal Military Read more Band, yet is equally effective.
Though on a smaller scale, Jan van der Roost's 'Spartacus' shares with de Meij's symphony an inspiration of epic proportions, in this case the tale of a Roman hero. The tone poem has a grand, filmic quality, full of evocative flashes of brass. Along with André Jutras' 'Barrie North Celebration,' 'Spartacus' provides the disc with a finish which is lighter than 'The Lord of the Rings' yet still satisfying. Read less
