Notes and Editorial Reviews

Knut Sonstevold (born 1945) is a composer's child. Both parents wrote music. He has even written quite a bit himself but finds it hard to combine his own music with the wealth of other music flowing through his life. He once heard of the traditional Greenland music festivals, which were preceded by two weeks complete silence: wonderful new songs would arise as a result of this. This is how he composed; silence - music. As a teenager he studied under the renowned anti-vibrato professor in Vienna, Karl Ohlberger. (He learned vibrato later from a flautist). At the age of twenty-two he traveled to Utrecht to listen to new music and to learn something about new electronic possibilities for broadening the bassoon's sound spectrum. Today he is the Read more principal bassoonist of the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra. Before that he held the same position with the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic and before that with the Danish Radio Orchestra. He is always on the lookout for challenges in his playing and especially enjoys playing works by composers he knows personally. He believes this affords him wonderful perspectives on the music itself. This album attests to both his wonderful abilities and his great commitment to the new music by the composers on this disc whose music is unfamiliar to you. Read less
