Fabulous Chamber Music January 12, 2014 By Henry S. (Springfield, VA) See All My Reviews "Spanish composer Joaquin Turina's first published work was his densely textured Piano Quintet, Op. 1, which is the concluding work on this excellent Meridian CD. The CD notes explain that, following the Quintet's premiere, Turina was advised to change his compositional style to emphasize Spanish idioms, and he certainly took this advice to heart. While the Piano Quintet has all the trappings and nuances of the Brahmsian style, the other works on the disk are much lighter in ambience and are indeed based on Spanish motifs. What makes this disk so attractive is the variety of structures presented- Piano Sextet, String Quartet Serenata, a violin/piano fantasy, and short piece for soprano and string quartet, in addition to the aforementioned piano quintet. England's excellent Amigos String Quartet is joined by four other supremely talented performers to flesh out the various works (pianist Miyako Hashimoto, violinist Roland Roberts, viola soloist Philip Dukes, and soprano Eileen Hulse). Meridian's crystal clear sonics are a perfect foundation for the glowing performances of all works on the program. In short, this lovely recording presents chamber music which may not be well known, but shines brilliantly with the highest levels of artistic excellence. Chamber music fans will not want to miss out on a chance for a truly enthralling listening experience. Highest recommendations!" Report Abuse
