mid-19th-century brass band, was probably the most sophisticated music that most Americans of that era would ever hear. This program consists of marches, dances, popular tunes, an opera aria transcribed, and three German chorales—the last, no doubt, reflecting the influence of Moravian musicians in the ranks. While the earlier disc concentrated on the library of the 26th Regimental Band, the current disc draws from other sources as well, but all of it is in much the same vein. If you liked “A Storm in the Land” (as I did), you should find “Cheer, Boys, Cheer!” equally irresistible; all that’s missing is
Dixie.
As before, the ABQBB’s dazzling performances are matched by New World’s crisp recording. As usual, New World’s notes are exemplary. What’s not to like?
Incidentally, the aforementioned aria is from

’s ubiquitous overture, but who among us has ever heard any of its arias, even in transcription? Here’s your chance.
