It was founded in 1984 by pianist Diana Ambache specifically to accompany her in Mozart piano concertos, and the music of Mozart continues to make up a large part of the repertory. The group frequently plays at South Bank concerts and at St. John's Smith Square in London and is often broadcast on the BBC. It has toured extensively in support of Ambache's duo partner, oboist Jeremy Polmear. The Ambache Ensemble does not use a conductor; however, that has not prevented the group from recording extensively, as it has appeared on the Meridian, Naxos, Virgin Classics, Chandos, and Signum Classics labels. Some of the recordings made by the Ambache Ensemble for labels that have gone out of business have appeared on its own imprint, and these are available from the group's website at www.ambache.co.uk/navigate.htm.
