Pianist Alton Chung Ming Chan is a native of Hong Kong and a dual Chinese-Canadian citizen. Pianist Alton Chung Ming Chan is a native of Hong Kong and a dual Chinese-Canadian citizen. After graduating from the Cheung Sha Wan Catholic Secondary School in Hong Kong, Chan continued his education in the United States, first at Texas Lutheran College, then at the University of North Texas, where he studied with Joseph Banowetz. Chan made his concert debut in Hong Kong in 1983 where he appeared in a televised concert as soloist with the Central Chinese Opera Orchestra. Chan has written numerous published articles on piano pedagogy and performance in both Chinese and English and is a dedicated teacher and serves as director to a private community music school in Dallas called Music Learning Unlimited. Chan also leads the Dallas Chinese Children's Choir and served for three years as director to the Dallas Asian-American Youth Orchestra.
Chan has recorded Godowsky's four-hand piano music with Banowetz for the Marco Polo label. Chan's duet recording with Banowetz for Toccata Classics, Balakirev and Russian Folksong, was nominated for a Grammy Award in 2007. Chan has also edited Godowsky's four-hand piano music for publication and has likewise edited music by fellow Chinese-Canadian An-Lun Huang for print media. |
