Notes and Editorial Reviews

I never thought I really wanted to hear Thomas Morley's Now is the month of Maying again--but I changed my mind when I heard the opening track on this outstanding CD from the male sextet Amarcord. There's a freshness, brightness, and infectious rhythmic energy here that makes you not only happy you heard this zillion-times-recorded song, but even causes you to reach for the repeat button for yet another--or two, or three--hearings before moving on to the rest of this well-chosen, totally engaging program of 33 secular vocal works from the European Renaissance.

You could accurately call this group the "German King's Singers"--like their English counterparts, these six
Read more singers originally were members of a school choir (in this case the St. Thomas Boys Choir in Leipzig)--but they definitely have their own well-honed sound and ensemble character. And here they show everything from the most refined, warmly resonant singing to the most "colorful", raw-edged vocal interpretations, all depending on the nature of the work, its text, and origin.

Favorites abound--Dowland's Come away, come, sweet love; Passereau's Il est bel et bon; Bennet's Weep, O mine eyes; Josquin's Mille regretz; the anonymous Dindirin, dindirin--as well as a plethora of rarely-heard gems. The singing is flawless, the performances captivating, the whole program entertaining from first note to last, all of which is complemented by ideal recorded sound. This is among 2007's outstanding vocal ensemble recordings, and if you enjoy such groups as the King's Singers (which released its own "Madrigal Mystery Tour" on EMI a number of years ago), the Banchieri Singers, Die Singphoniker, or the Gents--you'll absolutely love Amarcord's delightful and delectable Book of Madrigals. Unreservedly recommended!
