Notes and Editorial Reviews

The Quatour Molinari is proud to present the winning works from their Second International Competition for Composition. Through this competition, the Quatour pursues its mandate to promote new music, while also discovering young musical talent from around the world. An international call for submissions was made to composers under age 40, inviting them to submit unperformed works for string quartet. The winning works were chosen by a jury made up of the Canadian composers Jose Evangelista, Alexina Louie and Michael Matthews as well as the four members of the Quatour. The 2003-2004 selections are incredibly diverse and rich. Some of the winning works pay homage to Indo-Malayan musical traditions while others are built upon imaginative Read more interval progressions and timbre variations. Some of the works are mystical in character while others are emotionally charged. The four prizewinning selections impressed the judges with their innovative writing and constant musical invention. Works for the modern String Quartet do have a large following among modern music listeners. Needless to say, a disc like this should appeal to them. Read less
