Notes and Editorial Reviews

The Atrium commit their Shostakovich calling-card to disc – and it still grips

The award-winning Atrium Quartet find a fascinating range of moods in Shostakovich’s Fifth String Quartet, not least a sense of fun that threatens to spiral into something far more sinister. The musical emotions remain mixed right to the end, in a performance as thought-provoking as it is involving, If their Beethoven (String Quartet No 10) doesn’t reach these heights, this is still a disc to have.
