Alemdar Karamanov studied at the Moscow Conservatory with Dmitri Kabalevsky and Tikhon Khrennikov. His classmates included Alfred Schnittke, Rodion Shchedrin and Sofia Gubaidulina.

Karamanov composed 24 symphonies, 3 ballets,7 concertos, 3 string quartets and various works for orchestra and chorus. He is likely best known in Russia and Ukraine as a symphonist.
