Caturla studied in Havana and also with Boulanger in Paris. He founded and conducted the Orquesta de Conciertos de Caibarién. Caturla's compositions were lively concoctions of Afro-Cuban rhythms, broken forms, unusual chord combinations, and unbalanced orchestrations.
