PIANO DUO PROJECT Meisha Adderley, Stacey Holliday (pn) ALBANY 1383 (51:53)

WHITE Rock-a-My Soul. Rhythm of the Claves. STILL Summerland. Kaintuck. Scherzo. SMITH Mirrors. ADDERLEY Allegro Giocoso

This delightful duo sets a lovely spirit for this recital with Read more their sweet and easy rendition of Dolores White’s luscious 1996 arrangement of the spiritual Rock-a-My Soul . Their deliberate, but firm pacing emphasizes the powerful melodic content of the music, rather than the rhythmic thrust that is more familiarly expressed in song. But then rhythm becomes the core of White’s Afro-Cuban inspired Rhythm of the Claves , which opens with the non-pitched pattern of the actual percussion instruments, which is then subtly mimicked and expanded on in the piano part.

William Grant Still’s three vignettes are thoughtfully crafted and lushly beautiful works that owe as much to the European classical tradition as they do to American sources. He makes the most of the four-hand format, finding a rich texture without sounding too busy. The big work is Kaintuck’ from 1935, a dreamy, almost painterly depiction of a summer walk in the countryside of Kentucky. Still’s quietly powerful work forms the heart of this album of four-hand piano music.

Adderley and Holliday’s rather pastoral program gets a bit of a modernist jolt with the music of Hale Smith, a fine, intensely expressive composer, who died in 2009, and probably deserves a wider recognition. Smith was primarily noted as a composer who drew his sources from both traditional classical sources and jazz, but here he makes his voice heard in a more abstract, chromatic language, albeit with a directly dramatic sensibility.

Cedric Adderley’s delightfully baroque Allegro Giocoso closes the program. Is Cedric the father of Meisha? Brother, uncle? The notes do not say, and I could not verify anything online. For that matter, are these Adderleys related to the jazz royalty Adderleys, including sax legends Cannonball and Nat? I couldn’t tell you. But the mystery did not detract from my enjoyment of this consistently engaging recital, played with real distinction.
