Initially, the three trios recorded here do not seem to share much in common. Spanning three centuries, they involve three periods of music history, were written by men of distinctly different backgrounds, and they represent contrasting musical styles. However, with these three works side by side one can witness the piano trio as it grows from its infancy with Haydn to the cerebral colors and exotic sound experiments of Ravel. Both Mendelssohn and Ravel take the trio to new heights, and yet they also must look backward to Haydn as the founder and the inspiration of a genre which has always been a favorite with amateurs and professional alike.
