Something Unexpected October 12, 2012 By Gordon C. (Rocklin, CA) See All My Reviews "George Walker, along with Ulysses Kay, represents a younger generation of African American composers, after William Grant Still and William L. Dawson, who came of age in the mid-20th century, and were more attuned to the innovations of that period, and less influenced by folk music. Still, the works on this disc are quite listenable, not too avant-garde, except perhaps the latest work, Poem for Soprano and Orchestra, written in the mid-80s. The poem Walker sets here is "The Hollow Men" by T.S. Eliot, one of my favorite poets. The disappointing thing about it is that the angular melodic line makes the words difficult to understand. Also, there is a brief spoken introduction to the piece, which sets forth an interpretation of the poem which I'm sure is far from what the poet intended. A solid b plus for this one!" Report Abuse
