The title THE ALL-STAR CHRISTMAS ALBUM might herald yet another dreadful compilation of worn-out Christmas tunes sung by worn-out stars. Fear not, for behold it brings you tidings of great music! Wrapped in this attractive blue package, you'll find Bryn Terfel, Placido Domingo, Sarah Brightman, and José Carreras--some of the catalog's brightest stars--and also selections from Christmas-related classical compositions both familiar and unknown. The disc begins with a rollicking "For unto us a child is born" and continues in holiday spirits to a "Jauchzet, frohlocket" that will leave you wanting to rush out and do some jauchzet-ing and frohlocket-ing (rejoicing and being jubilant) of your own. In between, you'll find familiar hymns and carols like "Adeste fideles" and "Hark! The Herald angels sing" alongside some of the more meditative moments of Classic and Baroque music, of which the Mozart "Laudate dominum" is surely the highlight. The performances are, as expected from Deutsche Grammophon's catalog, first-rate. All in all, THE ALL-STAR CHRISTMAS ALBUM is sure to be an agreeable addition to your holiday party, tree-decorating, or sitting at home watching the Yule log. |
