Notabu is an exciting chamber ensemble specializing in modern works. For this disc, the group devotes its unique talent to the fresh and original compositions of Gunther Becker. "Quasi una Fantasmagoria" for wind sextet derives its inspiration from a piece by Robert Schumann. With florid solo lines punctuated with explosions of brass, this 12-tone piece is a challenging work that Notabu plays with flair and virtuosic aplomb. "Hard Times-Multisounds" showcases the bassoon, in a tremendous performance by Andreas Boege, in a manner subtly evoking Asian music (the piece is dedicated to Isang Yun) while remaining consistent with its 12-tone style. "Game for Nine" is full of color and variety. With its emphasis on guitar and percussion along with subtle intrusions from the flute and other woodwinds, the piece achieves a shimmering clarity that brings to mind Takemitsu's sparse twelve-tone works of the 1960s. The highlight of the disc may be "Mikrographien," a forbidding four-movement work for piano. With its percussive sounds juxtaposed against fleeting, skittering figures, this piece, with a powerful performance by Annette Heinicke, is arguably one of the most demanding yet enthralling works in the modern repertoire. |
