Notes & Reviews Back to Top
▲ This brand new recording was the last one to be made by Deborah Riedel, who passed away on 8 January 2009.
▲ ‘This recording of ‘vocal treasures’ is therefore Riedel’s memorial: it is hard to imagine a better one … Riedel brought to the art song the same qualities with which she imbued opera – and this felicitous selection of the elegant, the beautiful and the quirky is the perfect way to celebrate her talents and lament her loss.’ The Age January 2009
▲ The disc, the latest addition to ‘The Richard Bonynge Edition’, contains rare Italian, French and English opera arias, many receiving world premiere recordings from the Richard Bonynge Archive: an eclectic mix of composers, from late 18th Century masters such as CPE Bach to little known songsmiths such as Crescentini and Thomas Arne.
▲ The songs are all from the 18th and 19th centuries, but the main unifying principle is that all of them have – at one point or another – been discarded or forgotten.
▲ The glorious Sieglinde in the Melba / Adelaide Ring Cycle, leading Australian soprano DEBORAH RIEDEL is here in magnificent vocal form. At times she sounds uncannily like Joan Sutherland in her timbre, but has a strength and richness all her own.
▲ The booklet contains a wealth of information, with complete translations of all aria texts.
▲ The ARCADIA LANE ORCHESTRA comprises Sydney’s finest musicians led by internationally distinguished violinist ANNA MCDONALD.

R E V I E W S

"A beautiful disc complemented by design to match and including the lyrics. Melba clearly takes great care not only with the quality of its recordings but also with the presentation of its products. In short, another disc well worth recommending." -- Web La Opera (Spain)

"This enchanting journey into neglected musical byways makes a fitting tribute to Deborah Riedel … Her gorgeous voice brings great warmth and tenderness to these charming songs." -- New Classics (UK)

"In short Melba’s ‘Richard Bonynge Edition’ is distinguished by its incomparable production values. With this enterprising 2008 digital programme, Deborah Riedel reveals a bounteous seam of unfamiliar, wholly blissful vocal gems – a glistening treasury of song." -- Music and Vision Daily (UK)

"Such elegance! … if you love beautiful singing, you will find it in abundance here … It is her solo discs for Melba Recordings, however, that puts her in a class by herself." -- The Classical Music Guide (US)
