"Gustav Leonhardt...is unquestionably the most influential harpsichordist of our time, both as teacher and performer. He has also long been active as an organist...Here [he] presents compositions from Austria and South Germany, performed on two monastic organs (those of the Pramonstraten Abbey in Schlagl and the Augustiner-Chorherrenstift at Klosterneuburg), both recently restored. Leonhardt's program, divided equally between the two instruments, is symmetrical -on each half there is a Pachelbel variation set, and a Speth toccata, and each closes with a Muffat toccata....I was pleased to make the acquaintance of the Speth toccatas. [They] are dramatic, full of dissonance and chromatic harmony. Leonhardt's performances are attractive, and the recorded sound is very good. The booklet includes extensive information on the organs..." -- Tom Moore, Goldberg Magazine [1997] |
