Notes & Reviews Back to Top
The Cello Octet Conjunto Iberico is one of a kind. One might not think eight cellos would achieve a variety of sounds sufficient to sustain an audience beyond curiosity. Quite the opposite is true, however. The group manages the expressive nuance of a small quartet with the swelling fortes of a string orchestra. 'Bachianas brasileiras No. 5' by Heitor Villa-Lobos is an ethereal piece, the Octet providing a watery accompaniment on which the notes of superb soprano Pilar Jurado colorfully float between tonal centers. 'Três cançoes negras' by composer Marlos Nobre is reminiscent of a Weill song cycle with Brazilian undertones, clearly placed in the twentieth century, yet accessible to the listener, and again mastered by the Octet. (All of the Nobre works are dedicated to the Conjunto Iberico).
Conductor Elias Arizcuren has shown great originality in the formation and programming of the Conjunto Iberico. We are fortunate to have many of their works on disc. The cellists of this ensemble play with the finest of sympathetic ears to what the others are doing, and seldom create the impression of technical prowess as a replacement for emotional expression. An original from start to finish.
