The Boulanger sisters were significant figures in 20th-century music: Nadia, the teacher of Copland and countless others, and her younger sibling Lili, a gifted composer whose death at age 24 robbed music of one of its most promising talents. Despite her reputed genius, Lili Boulanger's music is little heard, which makes this release, featuring her works for chorus and orchestra in excellent performances, all the more welcome. Echoes of Debussy are occasionally heard, but by and large, Boulanger's orchestration and harmony have a harder edge than her impressionist precursors. Boulanger's psalm settings are laden with brass fanfares and archaic choral writing evoking medieval times. Works by Honegger ('King David'), Roussel, and others would later spring from a similar inspiration, if not directly from Boulanger's influence. Boulanger's development is evident in the works included here, which span the last five years of her life and range from the brief, robust victory song of Psalm 24 to the much grander scale of Psalm 130, which rises evocatively "from the depths," as its first line proclaims. If the mood is often somber, it is not monochromatic; agony often gives way to serenity. Conductor Mark Stringer and the musicians involved have done Boulanger justice with dramatic, resonant performances. |
