MIGHTY ORGANS is a recording devoted not only to music written around the organ, but to the specific instruments themselves. Included in the liner notes are specifics about the history and construction of the instruments here, a reminder of the inextricable link between performance and musical instrument unique to the organ world. Of course, this is also a collection of great and diverse organ pieces, which highlight the organ not only as a solo instrument, but an ensemble one as well. The Voluntary for Trumpets and Organ by Croft is a pre-Baroque work, buoyant and dance-like with pedal percussion, in three sections, the full ensemble joining in the balanced third. The performances are first rate. Glenn Gould's rendition of Contrapuntus' No. 1 and No. 2 from 'Art of the Fugue' (one of Bach's final works) is striking, distinctive in color and idiomatically smart, performed on the Casavant organ in Toronto. The 'Organ' Symphony of Saint-Saëns is a unique work, played by organist Anthony Newman with beautiful expressiveness. This recording brings together performances of very high talent, and for organ aficionados or newcomers to the instrument this disc will be a find. |
