| A lot has been written about the Boris Godunov of Ludwig Weber, and there is also a great painting showing him in the role. An article by Heinrich Neumayer called "Ludwig Weber and Boris Godunov" appeared in the magazine "Neue Wege" 4th year, 1949, No. 45. The study, written with great understanding, presents a precise analysis of Weber's concept of the role, which embraces Boris' contrary personality traits, his awareness of power, his cruelty, his burden of guilt, his tender, protective love for his daughter and son - all revealed in an unprecedented, often alarming way and crowned by a magnificent, deeply felt vocal characterization. The author of the article who had heard Feodor Chaliapin as Boris, takes the view that - with all due respect to the Russian genius - Weber's performance was the more moving, because "he does not weigh upon the performance like an overwhelming force, but fits in like a figure in a huge tapestry." So, Ludwig Weber as Boris Godunov - he sang the part for the last time on May 3, 1955 in the Theater an der Wien - has lived on so far only in the grateful memory of opera lovers. It is a stroke of luck that a recording long considered lost is now available which at least preserves Weber's vocal mastery at its peak. And here Prieser presents it to us now for all to hear for ourselves. | |||||
