| When Toscanini was asked to name the greatest singer that had sung under his leadership, he replied without the slightest hesitation, "Chaliapin." Chaliapin's Boris was due that homage and every other praise his performance received. On stage he had a presence more like an elemental force than a theatrical presence. The famed music critic, Neville Cardus wrote: "Chaliapin was as much a consequence of nature as of art - much more in fact. His physical stature dominated everything; the voice rich and deep and marvelously inflected by his actor's imagination filled the largest theater." Many recordings communicate the stature and beauty of Chaliapin's singing but none of them surpass the public performance of Boris at Covent Garden in 1928. Here, audiences heard not only his electrifying declamation in the big moments, which for all their staccato utterances were always fully sung, but also the unforgettable beauty and nobility of his singing of the quiet passages. One can hear the musical, dramatic and psychological stair to these great solos that enlarge their effect. In these preparatory lines there is phrasing so refined, so profoundly rich in subtle intonation that every sentence is like some rare painting to be treasured. In The Musical Times John Steane wrote: "Admirable beyond words...His performance was simply the acme of operatic art. Drama and music, song and sense were a unity; nothing finer could be imagined. The Death Scene is a masterpiece of dramatic resource and command, but what impresses afresh with every hearing is the tonal beauty of the quiet passages; the Prayer being incomparably haunting in its warm and sustained pianissimo." | |||||
