Darius Milhaud was one of the most important members of Les Six, the group of young French composers centered around Erik Satie about 1917. These composers were interested in freeing French music from impressionism, so they turned to styles coming from more popular tastes, such as Spanish style, jazz, dance-hall music, and cabaret. Such influences can be heard in this selection from the large opus of Milhaud. The listener will note the successful use of these styles throughout the set, for instance in the jazzy frivolity of the famous "Le Boeuf sur le toit," the use of the blues in 'La Création du monde,' and the tango motif in the "Souvenier de Rio" from 'Le Carnaval d'Aix.' Milhaud was born in Aix en Provence in 1892, and the latter piece is one of his lyrical memorials to his native region. The "off-hand" quality of Milhaud's music creates its own aesthetic, which is credibly captured by the conductors, Robertson and Nagano. The listener will appreciate the clear and logical classical style of Milhaud in this encompassing compendium |
