Shorter, colorful orchestral pieces by Bohuslav Martinu are collected together in this album that features the motorized syncopated rhythms, jazzy dance-like motives and shimmering orchestration found in Martinu's later six symphonies. Pieces from his Paris years include Polocas ("Halftime") and La Bagarre ("The Tumult") inspired by sporting events. La Revue de Cuisine ("Kitchen Review") and the Sextet are witty chamber pieces worthy to stand with Poulenc's music and Le Jazz is an earlier orchestral piece that captures the roaring 20s and ends by surprising the listener with voices. From the war years comes Thunderbolt P47, Matinu's exciting symphonic ode to the famous Allied fighter plane. - Supraphon Selections recorded 1970 and 1984. |
