Careful remastering has opened up the top of these two classic performances, putting them across with newfound vividness and immediacy. This is true even of the mono recording of Martinu's little-known masterpiece, Bouquet of Flowers, a sort of Czech answer to Stravinsky's Les Noces, and at 47 eventful minutes it's quite a substantial piece. Scored for mixed chorus, children's choir, soloists, and chamber orchestra it would make the perfect concert coupling to the Stravinsky, or even Orff's Carmina Burana. Needless to say, Karel Ancerl and his forces turn in an absolutely stunning performance in this first and only recording, made shortly before the composer's death from cancer in 1959.

Josef Pálenícek re-recorded the marvelous Third Piano Concerto under Vaclav Neumann for this same label, but that later effort doesn't compare to this fleeter, tighter, more exciting one. For a truly jaw-dropping example of the kind of rhythmic precision and hair-trigger ensemble coordination that Ancerl commanded, listen to the finale's central section, a couple of minutes before the return of the first movement's principal theme. Pálenícek matches the band beat for beat, turning in a dazzling account of the solo part, and I don't for a minute blame him for wanting to slow down a bit on revisiting the work. This is high-risk music making placed at the service of a terrific piece that belongs in the repertoire of pianists everywhere (fat chance of that!). Fabulous!
