East meets West, the Renaissance meets the 20th century, and the Swiss alphorn has an opportunity to solo on this unique recording. Swiss-born composer Heinrich Schweitzer is not very well known to most audiences outside his homeland, but judging from what is presented on this recording, he deserves wider recognition.
Schweitzer's 'East West Symphony' is the first major work to put both a full Chinese and a full Western orchestra on the same stage. The symphony blends Chinese and Western music in challenging and colorful fashion. For example, the work quotes Chinese folk tunes and Elgar's Violin Concerto before the two orchestras join forces in a grand climax. Another side of Schweitzer's art is displayed in his 'Historical Symphony Suite,' a work which quotes music by famous composers from the Renaissance to the 20th century. Perhaps the most colorful work on the recording is 'Swiss Panorama,' a lovely tone poem featuring the Swiss alphorn. The performances are all formidable, especially the work of the Chinese Broadcasting Orchestra in the 'East West Symphony.' Eclectic music, excellent performances and detailed liner notes makes this a fascinating musical journey.
