Notes & Reviews Back to Top
A follow-up to Mela Tenenbaum's exceptional earlier recitals of shorter violin pieces (Tea Time, Songs without Words, Mela/Viola). This one includes a full dozen of Brahms' Hungarian Dances in white-hot performances as well as Moszkowski's five Spanish Dances in sun-baked ones. There are gorgeously unexpected pieces (Leclair Aria, Rachmaninov Vocalise, Dvorak Romantic Piece No. 1) to counterbalance the excitement of Lehar's Hungarian Fantasie and a knockabout Roumanian Doina. Finally, in this most ambitious collection to date, there is fine Humor in Grainger's Molly on the Shor and an American period-piece ditty called "From the Canebrake" for viola and piano.
