Notes & Reviews Back to Top
Before the days of regular public orchestral concerts, let alone the advent of radio and the proliferation of recorded sound, the piano duet was the device that enabled music lovers to hear their favorite orchestral music at home. How many thousand Victorian duettists must have thumped out the Beethoven symphonies on the salon grand or upright? Even into the 20th century, a composer stood a better chance of having his orchestral music heard and played when it was available for piano duet. So, for example, it is not surprising to find Peter Warlock publishing a version of his Capriol Suite just ahead of the string orchestra one in 1925, and the full orchestra version which appeared two years later. The music on this disc harkens back to this same Victorian era.
