Notes & Reviews Back to Top
Premieres of hauntingly beautiful contemporary choral music by Norway's finest living composer, idiomatically performed by a superb Norwegian choir. Knut Nystedt (b.1915) has held a central position in Scandinavian post-war music. His music, always accessible, is wide-ranging in style, yet satisfyingly in accord with the uplifting spiritualism in vogue through such as Tavener. This is the first single disc survey of his sacred choral music, and includes world premieres of two substantial works. The Stabat Mater convincingly conveys the poignancy and hope in the Medieval poem, with gentle lines contrasted with dissonance centring around a dramatic cello solo. The recent Miserere for 16-part choir thrillingly contrasts elements of Plainsong with diatonic note-clusters. The Oslo-based Schola Cantorum were founded 35 years ago by Nystedt himself. Under Kåre Hanken, their conductor since 1987, the choir could not be bettered in giving persuasive, idiomatic accounts of the music of their fellow-countryman. ***** Star Review - Choir & Organ Magazine September 2000
