In his first solo album since unhitching his given name, Kennedy brings his usual uncompromising vision to the works of Fritz Kreisler (1875-1962). In his day, Kreisler's name was synonymous with impeccable taste in musicianship. His arrangements of famous tunes and his own salon works continue as staples of the repertoire--and given Kennedy's penchant for promoting the uncharted, this program comes as a complete (and very pleasant) surprise. Kennedy makes few concessions to the traditionally slick and portamento-ridden approach to Kreisler. "Liebesleid" is unusually slow, direct and intimate. A similar approach to Cyril Scott's "Lotus Land" creates a stunning climax of the intensity Heifetz brought to the Chausson "Poème." Rounding out the recital is Kreisler's expert and harmonically adventurous "String Quartet in A Minor." Incidentally, Kennedy's grandfather, Lauri, was the cellist in Kreisler's own 1935 recording of the quartet. Sonics are quite good, but this program is really distinguished by Kennedy's astonishing ability to communicate his vision of Kreisler. He strips years of stylistic shellac off these chestnuts and provides new insights into what made them worth transcribing in the first place. REVIEWS: BBC Music (6/98, p.54) - Performance: 4 (out of 5), Sound: 3 (out of 5) - "...Kennedy confounds expectations by giving an excellent performance of these often fiendishly difficult works....This...is a thoroughly enjoyable disc, confirming Kennedy as a musician who deserves to be taken seriously." |
