| This disc presents some of the pianist Ian Hobson's finest work to date. In the history of Polish music, Paderewski was chronologically the first composer after Chopin whose works for piano and orchestra enjoyed the approval of audiences worldwide. Paderewski had an obvious affinity for Chopin. Nobody could play Chopin the way he did. He understood, but also profoundly felt each note of his music. Chopin's art was for him the purest poetry, as well as the embodiment of the Polish national spirit. The Piano Concerto and the Fantasy rank with Paderewski's best and most representative works in their respective genres. He wrote them after his Berlin studies, after the Viennese masterclasses and after the first significant successes in his career as a concert pianist. He composed the Piano Concerto in 1888 and orchestrated it in July of the following year. His new composition won universal praise especially for the clarity and perfection of its details. Paderewski performed his concerto during his Carnegie Hall debut on November 17, 1891. Also on the program was the Saint-Saens 4th Concerto and some solo pieces by Chopin. The Polish Fantasy was composed during several weeks in Normandy in the summer of 1893. It was performed on October 4th of that year at the Norwich music festival for an audience of 8000. Its first American performance marked the inauguration of Paderewski's third American tour, on November 4th, 1895, again in Carnegie Hall. "Paderewski has returned and the whole city worships him again." "The Fantasy gives us greater insight into the life of a nation which has long been concealed from the world by political oppression." The Fantasy consists of a single movement which contains several distinct sections of different character. | |||||
