This set was nominated for the 1999 Grammy Award for "Best Orchestral Performance."
Undine was reputedly Margot Fonteyn's favorite role. The three act ballet, freely adapted from Fredrich de la Motte-Fouque by Frederick Ashton, tells the story of the water nymph's ill-fated love for a mortal. Created for Fonteyn in 1956-7 and premiered in 1958, the work was aptly described as a concerto for the great dancer.
Henze's luminous score, his second major work following his move to Italy, is among the most beautiful ever written for the ballet, and one which has had very limited exposure outside the theater. Unlike the great Stravinsky ballets, it is also a continuation of the traditional full- length ballet complete with divertissement (there are two in fact, one of them being a miniature piano concerto).
This recording was a labor of love for Oliver Knussen, himself a considerable composer as well as a gifted conductor of twentieth century music, especially music for dance. When approached by Knussen about recording one of his major theater scores, 'Undine' was Henze's choice. Knussen's notes convey the wonder of his discovery of this music, something conveyed eloquently on the discs for all to savor.
