Notes & Reviews Back to Top
The religious music of Igor Stravinsky has yet to become a commonly known aspect of his catalog. He was not born into a religious family, and lost virtually all of his religious beliefs while still in school. However, a spiritual reawakening led him back to the Russian Orthodox church, spurring him to create some of his most beautiful music. It would be a mistake for choral music lovers to overlook the treasures of SACRED CHORAL WORKS.
Latin was the language of choice for most of his sacred music. Inspired by Mozart, he even wrote a Catholic mass. Three short liturgical pieces 'Otche nash,' 'Simvol veri,' and 'Bogoroditse devo reduysya,' are the only pieces Stravinsky ever wrote in Old Slavonic, the language of the Russian Orthodox church.
SACRED CHORAL WORKS is marked by achingly lyrical melodies and a piety that is never forced or stuffy. The performances here are seamless and smooth, with a warmth befitting such heavenly compositions.
