Alexander Scriabin's 'Prometheus, Poem of Fire' is one of the most audacious pieces ever written, attempting merely to depict creation and reveal the secrets of the cosmos. Wanting to enlist as many senses as fully as possible in this pursuit, Scriabin called for a "keyboard of light" in his score, intending to flood the concert hall with color that would correspond to the music, though this was never attempted in his lifetime. Gennady Rozhdestvensky leads the Residentie Orchestra of The Hague in a most seductive account of 'Prometheus,' not driving the music but massaging it with almost hypnotic control so that at the final climax, when it's time for the chorus to go airborne, he's ready for lift-off. The explosive piano obbligato is provided by Viktoria Postnikova, who is also a most alluring soloist in the serenely romantic Piano Concerto, as well as the youthful post-graduate Fantasy for Piano and Orchestra, a piece Scriabin never got around to orchestrating and heard here in an arrangement made by Rozhdestvensky himself. |
