STREET SONGS is an unusual CD in that it combines the virtuoso percussion playing of Evelyn Glennie with the vocal pyrotechnics of the King's Singers. Although the disc derives its title from the so-called songs of innocence by children from the British Isles, this recording ventures into a wide variety of folkloric and exotic sources, including the music of the African Bushmen and Zulu chant music. One of the standout tracks is "Song of the Broken String" by Peter Klatzow, a moody, slow-moving work evocative of ancient church music that has each of the King's Singers taking solo turns over the spare vibraphone playing of Glennie. The highlight of the album is the eleven-minute "Reaching Out" by David Horne, wherein Glennie takes a solo turn to display her entire battery of instruments. Glennie's other solo contribution, consisting of only marimba and vibraphone, is the beautiful "Giles" by Steve Martland. The plaintive vocal piece "Jenny Jones" closes the disc. With the King's Singers extending their repertoire and Evelyn Glennie playing an unusual variety of works written for her, this is a fascinating CD, especially for lovers of percussion. |
