Notes & Reviews Back to Top
Rainer Kunad belonged to the first generation of composers that received their musical education at musical colleges in the German Democratic Republic and were later to represent the musical life of their country. He had his first lessons with Paul Kurzbach, who himself had studied with Carl Orff. He studied at the Dresden University and Leipzig Musical College. From 1960 to 1974 he was employed as musical director and composer at the Dresden State Theater. In 1978 he was appointed professor at the Dresden Musical College and composer in residence at the Berlin State Opera. From 1982 to 1984 he was a guest professor at the Salzburg Mozarteum. In the 1980s Kunad devoted himself to compositions that had religious themes. Under the political conditions that existed in the GDR at this time, there was little opportunity for any of these works to be performed, which was one of the main reasons he left for West Germany in 1984, where he settled with his family. The four compositions presented on this CD are from his central creative period and, with the exception of the organ concerto, are presented here for the first time. It is also interesting to note that this CD presents Kurt Masur at an earlier stage of his career.
