| This is what you call "the genuine article." The legendary Arturo Toscanini knew Giuseppi Verdi personally, and got his first big break as a young conductor when he stepped in at the last minute to lead a performance of 'Aida.' Made in the favorable acoustics of Carnegie Hall, this live NBC broadcast recording of the Verdi Requiem boasts a uniformly strong team of soloists. Tenor Giuseppi di Stefano and bass Cesare Siepi are outstanding, and the Robert Shaw Chorale makes an especially memorable contribution. The intensity of Toscanini's vision is felt throughout in this reading, which has been universally celebrated since the day it was first heard in 1951, and in this new BMG incarnation it sounds better than ever. Also included in the set is a high-voltage Verdi Te Deum, one of Toscanini's last recordings, and a relative rarity, the first of Luigi Cherubini's two Requiem Masses, a favorite of both the maestro and Hector Berlioz. | |||||
